Fluoridation Presentation
& Public Forum

On September 10, Safe Water Spokane hosted a virtual Zoom forum on water fluoridation that was free and open to the public.

Following this video, you’ll find speaker and topic break-out discussions: neurotoxicity, the ongoing federal court case, the chemicals used for fluoridation, practicing doctors’ insights and observations, and a patient with sensitivity to the chemical.

Scroll down for speaker breakouts.

Jeff Irish

Chair, Safe Water Spokane

Jeff started Safe Water Spokane about one month ago, and already the group represent hundreds of residents opposing fluoridation.

The focus of the group is science.

Chris Neurath

Research Director, American Environmental Health Studies Project

  • Neurath discusses susceptibility of fetal and infant brain to permanent harm.

  • National Toxicology Program (NTP) concludes that fluoride is presumed to be a cognitive neurodevelopment hazard to humans.

  • Their evidence is based on 149 human studies.

  • NTP draft has found 27 high quality studies that indicate statistically adverse effects.

  • Fluoridation’s impact on IQ is comparable to lead.

Michael Connett, JD

Lead attorney, lawsuit against the EPA for allowing fluoridation -  statements from CDC, FDA and EPA, tried in federal court in San Francisco June, 2020 - awaiting judge’s decision

  • Lawsuit was filed against the EPA in 2017 under TSCA (Toxic Substances Control Act)

  • Statements were obtained from CDC, EPA, FDA and others under oath.

  • Important admissions: fluoride passes through placenta and gets to the fetal brain, and then interferes with its function.

  • CDC accepts that fluoride is an endocrine disruptor.

  • The safe dose for fluoride is not yet known.

  • FDA has not conducted research concerning neurotoxicity.

  • EPA agreed with studies that showed significant adverse effects similar to lead.

Paul Connett, PhD

Chemist / Toxicologist / Professor Emeritus/ Author

  • The fluoridation chemical is a waste product primarily from the fertilizer industry.

  • By selling the chemical to another industry, the hazardous waste product no longer has to meet hazardous waste standards.

  • The public water supply is a convenient solution for the disposal of this unprocessed waste once it is re-categorized as a sellable product.

Robert Dickson, MD

Practicing Family Physician of over 30 years

  • 98% of BC and Quebec and 97% of Europe does not use artificial water fluoridation.

  • World Health Organization has statistics that demonstrate water fluoridation has not influenced cavities.

  • Fluoride is not a nutrient.

  • Mass medicating without monitoring is neither ethical or moral.

Julie Simms

Seattle resident with hypersensitivity to fluoride

Julie describes her years of experiencing migraine headaches. Once she pinpointed that fluoride was the trigger, she was able to control her headaches within days. Her personal doctor has agreed that she should avoid the chemical. Because of this sensitivity she has to spend hundreds of dollars a year on water filtration within her home.

Bill Osmunson, DDS MPH

Practicing Dentist of over 40 years

  • Within his practice, Dr. Osmunson found that socioeconomics was the biggest factor in predicting tooth decay.

  • People who drink a lot of water are overexposed to fluoride.

  • Exposure to fluoride is now so common that many children, even in non-fluoridated areas, are developing dental fluorosis, a visible sign of ingesting too much.

  • Around two-thirds of children show evidence of overexposure.

  • There is little correlation between better dental health and fluoridated areas.
